Economy sees 4% growth, GDP per capital crosses US$ 3000

Bhutan’s economy grew by over four per cent last year as compared to 2016. The country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has grown steadily since 2013.

As per the National Statistics Bureau (NSB), the country’s GDP recorded a growth of 4.63 per cent last year. In current price, the size of the economy saw an increase of more than Nu 15bn  in 2017.

GDP is the total value of goods produced and services provided in a country over a year.

The service sector recorded the highest growth at 7.15 per cent, followed by the primary and industry sectors with 3.39 and 2.41 per cent growth rate respectively.

However, the primary income received from abroad dropped in 2017. The income paid to rest of the world also dropped. As a result, the country’s Gross National Income (GNI) recorded an increase of 4.56 per cent.

With a population of over 700,000, the GDP per capita was recorded at more than US$ 3000. This is an increase of 3.36 per cent from the previous year.
