The nation will tomorrow decide which of the two parties- DNT and DPT- contesting the elections would get to form the country’s third democratically elected government.

More than 300,000 voters are expected to cast their votes as Bhutan goes to the polls to elect a new government tomorrow.

If Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa wins, Bhutan will have a new party forming a government. If Druk Phuensum Tshogpa wins, this would be the second time the party receives a mandate to govern the country.

And if DPT loses, it will again be its second time as the Opposition.

In the Primary Round, there was a vote difference of 2702 between the two contesting parties. DNT secured 92,722 votes, while the DPT followed closely with 90,020.

DNT had received 55,166 EVM votes and 37556 postal votes, while DPT received 53,108 EVM votes and 36,912 postal votes in the Primary Round.

Close to 305,000 voters registered to vote through EVMs in the Primary Round last month. Of that, only close to 183,000 turned up to cast their votes.

Nearly 80,000 of total 102,531 registered voters voted through the Postal Ballot Facilitation Booths (PBFB) in the Primary Round.

For the general election, a total of 84,829 of the total 102,363 registered voters cast their votes at the facilitation booths, which remained open from October 10- 12.

The PBFB voter turnout in the general election was almost 83 per cent, which is an increase of a little over five per cent from the Primary Round.

A total of 865 polling stations have been set up across the country for tomorrow’s general election. The election commission has also deputed more than 5,000 officials on election duty.
