Khuru is no longer just a traditional game played to promote and preserve the sport. It has become a business for some organisers. In a year over eight khuru tournaments are organised in Monggar. Earlier this month another Khuru tournament was organised.
Every team has to pay Nu. 6,000 as entry fee. The organiser is organising the tournament for the second time.“Last year was better as thirty one teams participate. This year only 20 teams participated. So I neither got profit nor loss. Last year I got profit,”says Kezang Phuntso, organiser.
Organisers also make the tournament interesting by bringing in dancers to keep the spectators entertained.
The villagers look forward to tournaments like this as it gives them a break from their farm works. A participant said he is taking part in the tournament as he loves to play the game.
“When we come to know about tournaments like this we plan in advance. We don’t play just to win. It is our hobby so we like to play the game.”
Apart from the business aspect, such tournaments help to preserve and promote Khuru and provide entertainment for the spectators, who otherwise lack entertainment.
