Works are underway to widen the farm road to Rookha and Lawa Lamga Chiwogs of Wangdue Phodrang. However, the people of these two chiwogs are not happy with its execution as it has caused them only more inconvenience.

The widening of the 25-kilometre farm road in Athang Gewog began last year. Locals say they have not been able to reap its benefits.

In summer, the road remains frequently blocked due to landslides.

“The condition of the road is better when it doesn’t rain. But when it does, there are frequent landslides,” Chimi Lham said.

The poor condition of the farm road has also affected the primary school in Rookha. Transporting ration to school has become challenging.

The Gewog Administrative Officer (GAO) said the work is still within the contract period. It will have to be completed this year.

“The widening works trigger landslides and cause roadblocks. It will take at least three years for the road to stabilize. As of now, we have some arrangements made with the contractor,” Sherub Dorji, the Athang GAO, said.

For now, the people’s hopes are pinned on the candidates from their constituency.

They are hopeful that whoever wins will look into the matter as promised during the common forum.
