Beginning November this year, the residents of the old Doksum town in Trashi Yangtse will have to pay rent to the dzongkhag administration.

This is because the house owners of the old town were paid compensation for their houses in 2013 when the town development works for the new township began.

The houses belong to the government. However, until now, the house owners have been keeping the rent from the tenants. There are 12 houses with over 40 shops.

“It was decided, after we discussed with the people and the dzongkhag administration, that we will start collecting rent from November this year,” Rinchen Leyda, the Municipal Engineer, said.

The shopkeepers are now expecting their rent to decrease.

Meanwhile, the house owners are yet to receive the land compensation. The dzongkhag administration said the land compensation will be made as soon as they receive new lagthram of the old town.

“In the old thram, they have only one to two decimals or at the most five decimals of land. But in 2009, after the resurvey, the landholdings might have increased. That is why we were waiting for the new lagthram to compensate them,” Rinchen Leyda said.

The residents of the Doksum town in Trashi Yangtse will have to shift to the new township by end of next year.

Considering the safety concerns of residents in old town, the constructions at the new township began in 2016.
