The Wangchuck Centennial Park office in Bumthang is promoting upper parts of Chhoekhor Gewog as an alpine region. This is being done to attract tourists and to preserve the environment.

Villages like Dhur, Goling, Kharsa, Damphel, Zhabjethang and Nasiphel under the Gewog are being promoted. The Chief Forestry Officer, D.S Rai said that they wanted to make the region unique. “So what we have done is we tried to have Shinglep roofing over CGI sheets so that it looks very unique and really look like alpine village.”

The Gewog administration office said the concept would benefit the local residents by promoting eco-tourism and preserving the environment.

“According to experts, the Shinglep roofing will firstly help preserve the environment. The Shinglep roofing will not reflect the sun’s ray to the trees which prevent the trees from wilting.  Since the villages are located at high altitude, the sun’s rays will be well consumed by the Shingleps and will keep the house warm in the evening. Apart from this, the risk of disappearing wild animals will be reduced,” said the Gup, Sangla.

The wooden planks or Shingleps were provided free of cost by the Wangchuck Centennial park office.
