The residents of Hongkong market in Thimphu have been faced with water shortage for about three months now.

Some shopkeepers and restaurant owners in the area hire vehicles to fetch water from other  places.

38-year-old Tshering Dem, who owns a milk booth, spends about Nu 3000 to fetch water everyday.

“The shortage is more severe this year than in the past,” she said.

“We drive our cars to fetch water and sometimes we buy from others. About 80 to 90 per cent of our income goes into buying water,” a restaurant owner said.

Meanwhile, Thimphu Thromde is unaware of the issue. It says no complaints have been received from the affected residents.

“The water sources in Mothithang are drying up. The shortage is also due to increasing building constructions,” Thronpon Kinlay Dorjee said.

“There is nothing much I can do, but people can take their water tanks in vehicles to our water treatment plant in Jungshina for refills,” he added.

The Thrompon assured the water crisis in the thromde area will be addressed by next year with the completion of the central water supply project in Dodena.
