Thimphu’s Clock Tower Square to get a new look

From serving as a parking space in the 1980’s before it was turned into what it is today, the Clock Tower Square has seen its face change as rapid development swept through Thimphu over the decades.

Sitting right in the heart of the capital city, the area is all set to get a brand new look. Thimphu Thromde plans to spend Nu 5 million to give it a major makeover.

“The Clock Tower Square is an important landmark in Thimphu where many people gather and numerous events are held,” said said Thimphu Thrompon  Kinlay Dorjee.

Thrompon added that no significant maintenance has been carried out so far. “Therefore, we felt it is about time the place is renovated,” he said.

A visible change would be made to the clock tower to give an imposing look. “Maybe, we will increase the height of the tower to around the same height as the buildings surrounding the square or even higher,” said Thrompon  Kinlay Dorjee.

The water fountain, which does not function at the moment, will be renovated as well. The facelift will also see the square adorned with more innovative features. For that, the Thromde has floated an open competition for architectural design worth Nu 100,000.

The renovation works are expected to be complete by mid next year.
