Making vegetable cuisines more delectable

Vegetarianism is a growing trend among the Bhutanese. However, there are not many chefs who have profound knowledge to cook a variety of vegetarian cuisines in the country. So, 15 people underwent a weeklong training in the capital to prepare different types of veggie dishes.

The participants are equipped with skills to prepare various vegetarian items. The training has been helpful in incorporating variety to vegetarian ingredients and open the gate to greater culinary adventures.

Participants are content that they have been able to explore numerous cooking skills.

“We can encourage people to reduce the meat consumption by preparing delicious vegetable meals,” said one of the participants, Dechen.

Chef Kelzang, the trainer said the Bhutanese vegetarian items need to be updated to improve health as eating the same meals everyday does not meet daily nutritional requirements.

“Our Bhutanese eat everything from ema datshi to kewa datshi. The vegetables are so cooked but the vitamins which our body requires are all dead. So I taught them several items on how to prepare and taught them the basic things of cooking,” added Chef Kelzang.

With an objective of encouraging vegetarianism, Duedroi Rangwang Zhidhey Tshogpa plans to train more people across the country by getting a healthy variety in the vegetarian diet.
