160 farm roads, 49 not usable

According to the report of the Public Accounts Committee, out of over 160 farm roads in the country some 49 are not usable. Lack of bridges and inadequate maintenance and improper alignment are some of the reasons. The government has spent over Nu. 200 millions in constructing these farm roads.

The Committee also reported that some 64 Geogs still have no farm roads, whereas some Geogs enjoy excessive road connectivity.

Based on the report, the Committee also made recommendations to avoid the differences.

It says that proper planning, survey and prioritization should be carried out. This, according to the report, will ensure economy, efficiency and judicious allocation of resources.

It also reported that farm roads should be properly handed over to the community to inculcate a sense of ownership and where necessary bridges need to be built.

To carry out periodical inspection and monitoring the Committee recommended the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests to create a separate unit or a division.

After much debate and deliberation, the House decided to let the government go through the report and act accordingly.
