10,000 Bhutanese suffer from ear infection every yearMore than 10,000 Bhutanese suffer from ear drum infection known as Otitis Media, ever year. Otitis Media is among the most communicable diseases in the country.

Last year, more than 13,000 cases were reported.

An ear surgeon, Dr. Yu Yuasa, who is among the Japanese volunteers conducting ear surgery at the National Referral Hospital in Thimphu, said Otitis Media is common among children.

He said the symptoms are discharge from ears and hearing impairment.

The doctor said the disease will disappear if diagnosed and treated early.

The volunteer group has conducted more than 20 surgeries in the last two days.

They said a blockage of the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear and the back of the nose, causes the disease. An injury to ear also leads to Otitis Media.
