The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay called upon the SAARC member countries to exert itself to fulfill regional and international commitments to protect the environment, and build resilience against climate change.

“National actions must spur even greater collective actions at regional and international level,” Lyonchhen said in his address at the inaugural session of the 18th SAARC Summit in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu.

The Prime Minister highlighted Bhutan’s commitment in preserving the environment and said actions taken by Bhutan, as a tiny country, may not impact the world. “But, Bhutan will continue doing what is right.”

Lyonchhen also said the abundant natural resources and rich human resources in the region should be tapped for regional integration.

“Our human resources are the most precious asset. One fifth of the world’s population is in South Asia. We need to provide not just better education and skills development, but also enable policies to unlock the unlimited potentials.”

The Prime Minister called on the member states to exercise their political will to make it possible for the people of South Asia to reap the benefits of a close regional cooperation.
