70% of Bhutanese women not interested to contest elections

WomenandPolitics-More than 70 percent of women in the country expressed no-interest in appearing as candidates for future political elections, finds out a survey conducted by the Election Commission of Bhutan.

The findings were presented in the two-day international conference in Paro, yesterday.

“The findings indicated women have very low education which they think is a very important factor to expose their capacities and skills,” said the Election Officer, Kibu Zangpo.

He said it was apparent from the focus group discussion that women want stability and they don’t want to lose their jobs. And at the same time, the very strong indicator or factor or variable is the domestic responsibilities”

In the two-day international conference, representatives from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan presented their research done on women in elective offices.

The consultative meeting is a follow up of the fourth meeting of Forum of Election Management Bodies of South Asia, held last year, in Thimphu.

The Election Commission of Bhutan carried out three different nationwide surveys in last two months.

Reports from each country will be compiled as one and presented to the 5th meeting of Forum of Election Management Bodies of South Asia to be held later in Nepal.
