CenmentPlant-Zhemgang-Bardo- Zhemgang’s Dzongkhag Tshogdu has approved a proposal for establishment of a cement plant in Bardo Gewog. If it comes through, it would be the first cement plant in the whole of Zhemgang.

If materialised, the cement plant will be located at a place called Nyge-zer in Digala Chiwog under Bardo Gewog.

The feasibility study has been completed. It now has to obtain clearances from the Department of Geology and Mines and National Environment Commission.

This is the first such proposal to receive a go-ahead in Zhemgang. The Dzongkhag had in the past received proposals for cement, lime and other quarries but all were turned down.

The Dzongkhag did not want any threat posed to its rich biodiversity. Much of Zhemgang falls under National Parks and other protected areas.

The Dzongkhag Tshogdu said the proposal for the cement plant was approved considering the socio-economic benefits it would bring about.

The local leaders hope the cement plant would help alleviate rural poverty in the nearby communities through economic growth.

Some of the Dzongkhag Tshogdu members added that if the cement plant comes through, it would also help the upcoming 770 megawatt Chamkharchh Hydropower Project I and II.

If everything goes well, the cement plant is expected to be operational by early next year.
