Safety concerns over Babesa-Thimphu expressway

Expressway-FenceThe removal of the wire mesh fence road divider on the Babesa-Thimphu expressway is causing safety concerns for both motorists and pedestrians.

The wire mesh fence road divider on the expressway was removed in June as Thimphu was being prepared for the visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, the Thimphu Thromde says it planned to remove the fence anyway.

“There were so many accidents reported along the expressway, probably because of careless driving. Every time cars hit onto the wire mesh fence, we had to repair it,” said Kinlay Dorjee, Thrompon, Thimphu Thromde.

“After sometime, we couldn’t cope with the repairs. It was only during the recent visit by the Indian Prime Minister that we decided to remove those because it was looking really bad with so many openings,” he added.

However, the motorists say the removal of the fence has made driving more dangerous as people now cross the road from all directions.

Lack of zebra crossing adds to the problem. There is not even a single zebra crossing on the entire 6.2 kilometre expressway.

Some of the pedestrians also suggested footbridge would help a lot.

Meanwhile, the Thromde has proposed for eleven zebra crossings along the expressway.

Thimphu Thromde took over the expressway in July 2011.
