Sales of locally produced ice cream picks up

Bhutan Ice CreamAs summer sets in, the sale of locally produced ice cream in Samtse is gradually picking up. It has been just three months since the country’s first ice cream manufacturing unit was established.

In the last two months, the Manufacturing unit earned about Nu.80,000. But it was mainly from the sale of other dairy products.

However, beginning this month, the earning has increased by about Nu.60,000- just from the sale of ice cream.

If the demand keeps on increasing, the unit will need about 500 litres of milk to make ice cream.

Currently, the Bhutan Ice Cream uses 50 litres of milk everyday which is collected from its 25 members. It is sold in Tashichhoeling and school going children are their main customers.

Bhutan Ice Cream has a capacity to produce ice-cream worth Nu. 90,000 daily.
