Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering and health staff from the Pema Gatshel hospital conducted a surgery camp in the district, yesterday. People were also given endoscopy services. The camp was aimed at improving healthcare services.

More than 15 people were screened during the camp, which was conducted in the district hospital.

Had it not been for the camp, people visited Monggar, Thimphu, and Gelephu hospitals for such services.

Some people came from far-flung villages.

“I came here after hearing that there will be a surgery camp. So, I am very happy. If we have to travel to Monggar, it will be costly. The surgery camp has benefited us,” said Karma Jurme, a patient.

“If I had to go to Monggar, firstly it is far and it would also hamper my studies. Moreover, my parents will have to bear huge expenditure. So, we had an opportunity here to diagnose the health problems,” said  Kinley Wangmo, another patient.

Six patients underwent hernia surgery while four availed themselves of the endoscopy service during the camp.

The Prime Minister also met with the civil servants, staff of regional offices, and local leaders while in Pema Gatshel.
