The business delegation from Bangladesh met with the Prime Minister, Jigmi Y Thinley today. Speaking to the delegation, the Prime Minister said Bhutan and Bangladesh already share a good relationship. He said the visit by such delegation will help further promote the relation between the two countries, especially in area of trade and commerce.

“We are committed to strengthen the relations at political level. I am happy to say that as interested as Bhutan is to promoting bilateral relations there is indeed reciprocal and mutual sentiments and interest being expressed and demonstrated by the Bangladeshi side as well. Within this environment we can certainly look forward to collaborate in business to business level,” said Lyonchhoen.

The Prime Minister said Bangladesh can look into areas like medical services, education, technology and agro products for investments in Bhutan.

The meeting also saw discussions on the areas that have been identified by the delegation. Meanwhile, the President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry said there is a huge potential to work together in promoting trade between the two countries.

“Firstly, there is huge opportunity to invest in the agro-based industry, tourism, resorts, textile industry. Bangladesh have a huge potential for skilled labor force and market for ready-made garments to Bhutan, the US and China. Bhutan has huge hydropower. So if we join together Bhutan will be able to export 4 to 5 billion dollars in next 5 years time. Your Prime minister accepted the idea; very soon he will take up for discussion in the cabinet. If cabinet approves. We will process shortly,” said A.K Azad.

One of the members of the delegation also offered a full scholarship to a Bhutanese student at the Asian Institute of Women in Bangladesh.
