Dasho Tshering Wangchuk completes his tenure as Chief Justice

The Chief Justice Dasho Tshering Wangchuk completed five years in the office yesterday. Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck and members of the judiciary bid farewell to the Chief Justice. He was appointed as the Supreme Court’s Chief Justice in November 2014.

Dasho Tshering Wangchuk was one of the Justices of the Supreme Court before being appointed as the Chief Justice. From 2006-2010, he worked as Drangpon at the High Court. Prior to that, he was the Judicial Officer with the High Court. He began his career in 1987 as a Trainee Officer at the High Court.

In his address, he advised the judiciary staff to work with dedication and commitment and explained how the judiciary institution is important.

“If I talk about the institution, if you can’t do better, don’t ruin it. With time, there will be a need for changes but when you do so, you have to analyse whether it is going to benefit the institution or not.”

The Chief Justice also spoke about the special benches for corruption cases which will be opened soon. The special benches will be opened at four designated courts with each bench looking after five Dzongkhags.

“There are special procedures for conducting trials of corruption cases to endure speedy trials and judgement without much delay. There will also be a specific bench for corruption cases in the high court. It will be presided by the high court’s chief justice. Please work on it properly,” he said.

The Constitution states the Chief Justice of Bhutan shall be appointed from among the Drangpons of the Supreme Court or from among eminent Jurists by the Druk Gyalpo, by warrant under His hand and seal in consultation with the National Judicial Commission.
