Tsirang Dzongkhag is focusing on the development of flower gardens and parks to attract tourists.

According to the annual tourism report 2018, of the total 274,097 tourists who visited the country last year, only 68 tourists visited the district. The officials attribute rich biodiversity and the district’s moderate climatic condition that brought them to the district.

They say since there is nothing special in Tsirang to attract tourists, the dzongkhag now is working towards adding value to its surrounding.

“We have been planting flowers along the roads and in free and open spaces. It’s not just flowers, we also constructed several chortens. Similarly, we’ve been developing sports facilities as well. Everyone in the district is involved in this initiative,” Pema, the Tsirang Dzongda, said.

“Visitors are interested to visit sites, which are unique, with different features. Therefore after visiting Thimphu, Paro, Punakha and Wangdue, we are now aiming to attract Tsirang to be their another destination. If the tourists extend their stay it will help in income generation for our country.”

The dzongkhag dedicates every Friday afternoon in maintaining flower gardens and developing parks. And a common sight in damphu town today is flowers and plants in every building. The initiative is being replicated in the gewogs as well.
