Over 2,000 civil servants from Thimphu district took part in the first-ever civil service marathon held in the capital today. The Royal Civil Service Commission (RCSC) organised the event as part of the well-being programs to promote the health and well-being of the civil servants.

Participants began to gather as early as 5 am in the morning for the marathon. They took part in three different categories, women’s category, age 45 and above category and age 45 and below category.

In the women’s and age 45 and above category, the runners had to run a 10-kilometre distance. For the age 45 and below category, the distance was 15-kilometre.

Karma Wangdi from Department of National Properties (DNP) came first in the age 45 and above category, completing the race in just 40 minutes and 25 seconds.

In the women’s category, Dechen Wangmo, also an employee of DNP completed the race in 48 minutes and 30 seconds and stood first.

And in the age 45 and below category, Choki Dorji of RBG finished first completing the 15-kilometre race in 53 minutes and 52 seconds.

The civil service marathon is expected to encourage, inspire and motivate to improve their mental and physical health through running and exercise.

“Our aim is to keep all the civil servants fit at the workplace so that we could deliver the services better, efficient and effective to the general public,” Sherab Zangpo, the Head of Wellbeing Division of RCSC, said.

The RCSC plans to make the marathon an annual event and also organise in other parts of the country.
