The first ever Women in Politics Workshop was held in Paro. The two-day consultation workshop aimed to take stock of opportunities and challenges confronting elected women representatives at the national and local levels.

About 70 elected women representatives including Parliamentarians and grass roots women leaders attended the consultation workshop.

According to the Programme Officer of the National Commission for Women and Children, Sonam Penjor, the workshop was aimed to facilitate the establishment of a Network of Elected Women in Bhutan to empower, support and strengthen leadership capacities of elected women representatives. It was also to promote greater participation by women in politics.

Participants said people see it as a challenge when women take part in politics. They said the workshop has given them confidence to take part in future elections.

The workshop ended today. It was organized with support from the UN System in Bhutan, the Liaison Office of Denmark, and the Danish Institute for Parties and Democracy.
