India's decision to stop the export of sugar from tomorrow will not be a major concern for Bhutan, at least for now. The economic affairs minister says major sugar-consuming factories have already been directed to stock up. And the Food Corporation of Bhutan says it has enough sugar for general public to last more than a month. The Indian government announced the sugar export ban last week.  

In a bid to achieve the global target of affordable and clean energy by 2030, Bhutan unveiled its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 roadmap in the capital yesterday. The roadmap provides insights into how the country will focus on the energy transition by investing more in clean and renewable energy.

After armyworms started infesting potato fields in Muhung under Shermung Gewog in Monggar, the farmers are counting their losses. The presence of the migratory pests since the beginning of the month has already destroyed an estimated ten acres of potato fields. 

From nurturing their physical and mental development to preparing them for schooling with the right attitudes, the Early Childhood Care and Development or ECCD centre is considered crucial for a child’s overall growth. However, with no facilitators, three ECCD centres under Tendruk Gewog in Samtse have remained closed serving no purpose.

The President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, inaugurated the first Football Academy in Thimphu today. The academy at Changjiji was instituted to help footballers give equal time for both studies and training.

The Thimphu District Court acquitted Penjore, a private individual, of the defamation charges filed by the police. The judgement was passed today. He was on trial at the district court accused of defaming the Office of the Attorney General through his Facebook post last year.

As an urgent response to the mounting waste problem in the country, the government has repeatedly sought support from all the stakeholders including the communities. Though the support, especially from the communities has been lukewarm, one man has come to the forefront to do his bit towards waste management in the country. He is all set to shoulder the herculean task of conducting a nationwide cleaning campaign from next month.

With egg prices hitting an all-time low and feed prices escalating, poultry farmers are finding it difficult to sustain their farms. The farmers are not able to sell the eggs. However, these problems in Paro are expected to resolve once the Paro Valley Marketing Cooperative opens its outlets in Paro and Thimphu. The cooperative was formed recently.

The government has always pushed the farming communities in the country to move beyond subsistence farming. It has encouraged the farmers to take up agri-businesses. However, not many farmers are serious about it, citing issues of climate change, inconsistent market platforms and fluctuating commodity prices. But on the flip side, some are making strides in making agriculture a bankable business. One such farmer is Jamyang Phuntsho, 32, from Dzongthung village in Bartsham Gewog.

His Majesty The King is in the east on a Royal Tour which began on May 26th. Today in Tashigang, His Majesty granted Audiences to the faculty and students of Sherubtse College in Kanglung, and to Tashigang Dzongkhag Officials.
