Bhutan’s economy to shrink in 2021 but expected to rebound in 2022, ADB

The Bhutanese economy is projected to further drop by 3.4 per cent in the current fiscal year from 0.9 per cent in the last fiscal year. This according to the Asian Development Outlook 2021 is the most significant shrink since 1991. The report attributes the drop in GDP to the pandemic.

Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck graces the inauguration of “InFocus: a Photography Exhibition”

Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the Royal Patron of the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan, graced the inauguration of “InFocus: a Photography Exhibition”. The exhibition Catalog featuring 204 selected photographs along with the biography of the photographers was launched as well. The exhibition is held to encourage, promote and provide a platform for the photographers in the country.

Workers left waiting for wages after completing works a year ago, Samtse

Some 13 men from Chhu-Goo village under Norgaygang Gewog in Samtse, who worked as labourers while carrying out electrification works in their village, are still awaiting payment. They say works were completed in April last year. Aggrieved, they have been visiting the gewog office time and again for some intervention.

New water supply to benefit people of Goomkarmo, Punakha

Inadequate and unreliable water supply which has been there for more than a decade will finally come to an end for the residents of Goomkarmo chiwog under Lingmukha Gewog in Punakha. The additional drinking water supply was launched recently. The chiwog will now have a reservoir with 70,000 litres of water capacity, located about nine kilometres away from the chiwog. 

De-Suung National Service Water Project in Dhangdoong benefits about 60 households, Trongsa

Residents of Dhangdoong village under Langthil Gewog in Trongsa will now have reliable and safe drinking water. This is following the completion of the De-suung National Service Water Project in the gewog. The project will benefit about 60 households in the village. 

Health Ministry plans to conduct mass community screening for Phuentsogling from tomorrow

To lift the lockdown and to rule out the presence of any residual COVID-19 cases in the community, the health ministry will be conducting mass community screening for Phuentsogling from tomorrow.

Japan government confers Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star upon Lyonpo Dago Tshering

The Government of Japan conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star upon Lyonpo Dago Tshering. Lyonpo Dago Tshering, former Ambassador of Bhutan to Japan, is among this year’s foreign recipients, and in recognition of his contributions to strengthening the relationship and the friendship between Japan and Bhutan, Lyonpo will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star. It was announced today.

Three men in custody for breaking into the home of Haa OC

Three men in their early thirties are in Paro police custody for allegedly breaking into the house of the Officer Commanding of Haa when the officer was out of the station on official duty. Of the three suspects, two are from Paro and the other is from Haa.

Thrompon elect Ugyen Dorji, Thimphu

Residents of Thimphu Thromde chose a new Thrompon today. Ugyen Dorji is the Thrompon elect. Securing 1,776 votes, he beat the former thrompon Kinlay Dorjee who served two consecutive terms. Kinlay Dorjee secured 1,714 votes and Sonam Dorji secured 920. Ugyen Dorji served as deputy chief urban planner with the Thimphu Thromde prior to contesting for the post of Thrompon.

Thrompon elect Tshering Norbu, Gelegphu

Gelegphu chose Tshering Norbu over the former Thrompon, Tikaram Kafley. The Thrompon elect received 713 votes while Tikaram Kafley managed just 375 votes.
