Sarpang Strikers wins first-ever Women’s T20 Club Championship

Sarpang Strikers defeated Dechencholing Nazhoen to lift the inaugural Women’s T-20 Club Championship.

The stage was set at the Pelkhil Oval as Sarpang Strikers and Dechencholing Nazhoen readied to battle to be crowned winners of the first ever Women’s T20 Club Championship. The bragging rights was with Sarpang Strikers having already defeated Dechencholing Nazhoen in the league stages.

Dechencholing won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain Dechen Wangmo and Yeshey Choden opened the batting. The two put in a slow and steady innings. The slow start backfired as Dechencholing Nazhoen lost wickets while searching for big hits. They managed only 72 runs from their 20 overs. Dechen Wangmo top scored with 30 runs.

In reply, Sarpang openers did what they know best, attack. They chased down the target of 73 runs in 10.3 overs. The opening partnership between Sonam Peldon and Ugyen Dema enough to seal the championship. A sweet victory for the ladies from Sarpang.

At the awards ceremony, the former national team captain, Ugyen Dema, was awarded the player of the match award for her exploits with both bat and ball. Ugyen Academy’s Deki won the emerging player award. Sarpang Striker’s Sonam Peldon and Anju Gurung bagged the best batter and bowler awards respectively. Dechencholing Nazhoen’s Dechen Wangmo was awarded the player of the tournament award.

Six teams participated in the championship. The United Nations Chidrens Fund, UNICEF and the India Bhutan Foundation sponsored the tournament, organised by the Bhutan Cricket Council Board.
