The 32-megawatt Yungichhu Hydro Power Project in Lhuentse’s Maedtsho Gewog will be commissioned by mid of next year. As of now, around 65 per cent of physical work has been completed. The Druk Hydro Energy Limited, under the Druk Green Power Corporation, is executing the project.
The construction work for Yungichhu Hydro Power Project initially started in mid of 2022.
The project construction work is carried out in four main packages.
The civil work packages, which include weir construction, surface and under ground tunneling work, and the construction of surge shaft and drop shaft.
The weir construction, which is like a dam construction is in full swing. However, the work was hampered due to last year’s flash flood and mitigation works.
The tunnelling is expected to be complete by the end of next month.
The construction of surge shaft and drop shaft is almost complete.
A Bhutanese private construction company, Rigsar Construction Private Limited is carrying out the civil work.
The electro-mechanical package, which focuses on manufacturing generator and turbine, and substation setup work are being carried by an Indian private company, Voith Hydro Private Limited.=
The Bhutan Automation and Engineering Limited, a DGPC-owned company will set up the supervisory control, data acquisition system, and protection system once the building construction is completed.
The Bhutan Hydro Power Service Limited office, another DGPC-owned company is carrying out hydro-mechanical works.
Currently, more than 400 people, mostly Bhutanese are working at the project site.
The initial project cost is estimated at over Nu 3.5bn.
