Farmers in Bhutan can grow varieties of vegetables but only a few of them market the produce. In a move to enhance vegetable self sufficiency and to transform vegetable farming system to a market-oriented one, the Department of Agriculture organised a Vegetable Production Campaign in Lamgong Gewog in Paro on Friday.
Farmers watched closely as the trainers demonstrate how to sow seeds.
According to the District Agriculture Officer, Rinzin Wangchuk, the training is to encourage farmers cultivate vegetables and produce it in large quantity for economic benefits. “It is to encourage farmers to grow vegetables in winter. The farmers are buying greenhouse plastic film with government paying 60 percent of the total cost. So that vegetables could be grown in winter for uninterrupted supply of vegetables”
About 40 farmers were given seeds, greenhouse plastic film and water sprinklers. The initiative is expected to bring around 40 acres of area under vegetable cultivation in Lamgong gewog.
