The discussion for retirement benefits and other entitlements for the local leaders continue as the Local Government Entitlement Bill awaits endorsement. The local leaders of Tsirang are concerned about retirement benefits more than other entitlements.
Rinchen, 57, is the Mangmi of Kilkhorthang Gewog in Tsirang. Elected in 2011, Rinchen has two more years before his tenure as Mangmi comes to an end, something he is not looking forward to. He says his future is uncertain as it is still not clear if local leaders would be entitled to retirement benefits.
“Our future is in the hands of the people. We are not sure if we would be reelected. Hence, the need for retirement benefits,” said Rinchen.
Other local leaders in Tsirang also feel the same. The concern resurfaced at the recent Dzongkhag Tshogdu.“The members of parliament are entitled to retirement benefits. We are also elected representatives,”said Tsholingkhar Gewog’s Mangmi, Hari Prasad Adhikari.
The Local Government Entitlement Bill, which awaits endorsement, ensures that local leaders shall be entitled to allowances and benefits such as leave encashment, retirement benefits and other entitlements by law.
