Pema Choki, 37, from Khaling in Trashigang is the lone woman candidate vying for the post of gup.
She was inspired to contest for the post of gup after attending various training on women empowerment. Her desire to bring change punctuated by encouragement from the people also led her to contest for the post.
The former non-formal education instructor also contested as lone candidate from Khaling chiwog in zomdu. She secured overwhelming yes votes with 99 from 122 votes cast.
She has list of developmental activities that would be carried out if she wins the election.
“The most important is the farm roads. Some places have no health centres, and in some places school-going children have to cross rivers, so the bridges need to be built.”
She said her participation will further motivate other women to take part in the grassroots democracy.
She is pitted against three male candidates including the former Gup in her gewog.
