Trashi Yangtse town is in need for a new landfill to cater to its growing wastes. The current landfill has been filled to the brim and for the past three months, the municipality has been taking the wastes to a landfill in another town. The office has identified a potential landfill site but is waiting for funds.
Every month, more than 24 tons of wastes are collected from Trashi Yangtse town. The landfill at Lichen, which has been in use for more than a decade, has finally reached its capacity.
The Municipal office collects wastes from the town residents twice a week. All the garbage is now taken to another landfill located about 30 Kilometers away.
Tashi Yangtse Dzongda, Baburam Sherpa said, “The previous landfill is filled with garbage. So, we are using the landfill at Doksum. However, we are planning to extend the present landfill. Our engineers have already done the survey.”
The Dzongkhag administration has also identified a site at Langla to construct a new dumping yard. The new landfill will have an integrated waste management plant.
The Dzongda added, “Under the Waste Management flagship programme, we plan to have all the facilities at the landfill. We will have to wait until the government allocates the budget for the programme. Only then, we will be able to start the works here.”
The Dzongda said they are hopeful of getting a budget in the 2022-2023 financial year.
