The Department of Roads has found out that as many as 2,000 vehicles commute along the Thimphu-Wangdue highway daily, making it the most commuted highway in the country.
The road is classified as the primary national highway. To meet up to the standard, the road is being widened by up to 10 and a half kilometre.
The work began in January this year.
The Director of the Department of Roads, Karma Galay said they are also widening the road given the increased traffic. He said the width of current road does not have the capacity to put up with the increasing traffic.
The work will be carried out until the end of June. It will resume after the rainy season is over.
