As a prelude to a grand festivity that awaits the occasion of the 116th National Day, the students of Thimphu Thromde displayed an exhilarating cultural competition at the clock tower, yesterday. Hundreds of people turned up to witness the cultural extravaganza.
The programme started at around five in the evening. More than 30 schools participated in the competition.
The participants brought forth a series of traditional dance performances in the senior and the junior categories.
Students of classes PP to six were categorised under the junior category. Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School won the junior category, followed by Jigme Losel Primary School. Zilnon Namgyeling Lower Secondary School came in third.
Similarly, in the senior category, Motithang Higher Secondary School secured the first position.
Yangchenphu Higher Secondary School came in second while Zilukha Middle Secondary School won the third position.
Jamyang Rigphel, a student of Motithang Higher Secondary School said, “ the National Day allows fellow countrymen to express their gratitude to noble generations who have contributed to the sovereignty of our nation. I am most fortunate to be able to be part of this special occasion and I am very happy to be a part of the youth build-up programme as well. I, on behalf of the school and the youth of Bhutan, would like to wish the people of Bhutan a very happy and joyous National Day.”
“This day is an opportunity for Bhutanese to show our gratitude to Their Majesties. I am happy and fortunate to have been part of the build-up programme for the national day,” said Samten Zangmo, a student of Motithang Higher Secondary School.
The Thimphu Thromde organised the programme in collaboration with the Bhutan Scouts Association.
