World Habitat, an international charity organization awarded the Silver Award to the Tarayana Foundation’s Integrated Community Development for Poverty Reduction programme in this year’s World Habitat Awards. From around 250 entries this year, the program received the award.
The Integrated Community Development for Poverty Reduction programme gives communities the skills to build homes, enhance agricultural productivity and start income-generating businesses.
Since 2007, almost 2500 homes have been built and 1000 toilets installed, while 50,000 people have received trainings to develop skills and generate income.
The World Habitat Awards were established in 1985 for the identification and the promotion of good habitat practices. They were initiated in 1987 as World Habitat contribution to the United Nationals International Year of Shelter for the Homeless.
The World Habitat Awards recognises and highlights innovative, outstanding and revolutionary housing ideas, projects and programmes from around the world.
