Several Members of Parliament asked the economic affairs minister, Norbu Wangchuk on the delay to begin constructions of identified hydropower projects. During the question hour session in the National Assembly, today, the MPs asked if it would be possible to achieve 10,000 MW of energy by 2020.
Economic affairs minister, Norbu Wangchuk said hydropower projects take about 10 years to plan before the constructions can begin. Lyonpo said it is not possible to achieve 10,000 MW of electricity by 2020.
The minister also said construction of some hydropower projects has completed and that the ministry is in the process of preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR) of other identified projects.
Detailed Project Report of Amochhu Hydropower Project was completed last year but has some unresolved security issues, Lyonpo added.
Lyonpo also said the Kurichhu project will begin in the 11th FYP and they have already estimated a budget of Nu 400 M.
He said the hydropower projects also depend on the release of budget from the government of India.
