Two government secretaries have surrendered government quarters following a circulation on housing rules by the National Housing Development Corporation (NHDC).
The circular said a civil servant is not allowed to occupy a government quarter for more than ten years. It also says if a civil servant has a private house in the place they are posted then they cannot occupy government quarters.
The NHDC had issued the rules in January last year. They said the rules are to provide equal opportunity to all the civil servants.
“We are waiting for civil servants, who have houses in Thimphu, to voluntarily surrender their houses,” said the Managing Director of NHDC, Ugen Chewang. “Thereafter, we will follow the next course of action.”
The surrendered house will be reallocated to the applicants on the first come first serve basis.
