The search and rescue team couldn’t find the six expatriate workers who are still missing in the Wangchhu bridge collapse incident. For now, the continuous falling of the remains of the bridge is making the rescue operation difficult for the team. However, the operation will be resumed tomorrow.
The 204-metre long Wangchhu bridge along the Damchhu-Haa road collapsed at around 4:30 pm, yesterday.
The search and the rescue team comprising of DeSuup, Army, Police and officials from Project DANTAK has been at the site since early morning in search of the remaining missing persons. Of the nine workers involved in the mishap, only three bodies were recovered as of yesterday.
However, the continuous falling boulders and the fear of fragile structure slowed the rescue mission.
Determined to find the missing persons by any means, the team also tried their hands on drones. But the effort was in vain as the rescue mission was finally called off towards the afternoon.
The officials, however, informed that they are hopeful to find the missing workers soon. Excavators and kayaks will be deployed at the site from tomorrow.
Meanwhile, project DANTAK officials said that the cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained and a thorough investigation will be carried out.
Works to construct the bridge along the 12-km Damchu to Haa link road began in January 2017 at a cost of around Nu 230 M.
