The construction of Gewog Connectivity Road to Lauri Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar is nearing completion. Of the total stretch of almost 60 kilometres, works for only about five kilometres remain.
Once complete, travel time to the gewog centre will be reduced to one day. Previously, it used to take officially four days on foot to reach the gewog centre from Jomotshangkha Dungkhag.
The Department of Roads took over the works from the Dzongkhag Engineering section in 2012. By then, about 14.5 kilometres had been cleared.
The Executive Engineer, Yeshey Penjor said they have spent Nu 137 M so far. He said if all works-out, as planned, construction of the gewog connectivity road is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
The department has allocated Nu 26 M for the remaining five kilometres of the road. The construction is funded by the Government of India at a cost almost Nu 163 M.
In the meantime, Lauri Gewog’s administration has also completed surveying and allocation of budget for the construction of farm roads to some of its chiwogs.
They are waiting for the gewog connectivity road to reach their Centre.
