Difficulties in hiring skilled masons and carpenters are delaying the construction of houses at the new settlement in Khenadang under Zobel Geog in Pemagatshel.
The settlement was started six months ago with 44 families from different corners of Pemagatshel moving to Khenadang.
The 44 families constitute the poorest of the poor. They had no land or any other property in their previous places of settlement.
In June this year, they were all granted land as Kidu in Khenadang under a resettlement programme by the Office of Gyalpoi Zimpon.
In their new home, they are building modest houses. At the moment, 15 such houses are under construction.
With most of the constructions taking place at the same time, the settlers are facing problems getting labour.
“It is not much of a problem even finding a carpenter. The problem is with money. It will be of great help if we can get a small loan,” said Sonam Tshering.
The construction material is provided free by the government. .
The Khenadang settlement is connected by road and has access to safe drinking water. It will also get power supply soon.
An extended classroom building and an outreach clinic are also under construction.
