The Royal Education Council says it decided to lay off 42 staff members since they are non-civil servants and the council is now under the purview of the Royal Civil Service Commission.
The 42 staff members, including 16 from the Centenary Institute of Education in Yongphula, were recruited while the REC was functioning as an autonomous body.
The Royal Education Council following their merger with the Department of Curriculum Research and Development of the Education Ministry in December last year then came under the purview of the RCSC.
REC Officiating Director, Norbu Wangchuk shared the decision was however taken during the second Council Meeting in July chaired by the Prime Minister along with seven other council members.
He said with REC now under the Royal Civil Service Commission they cannot the laid off staff on regular basis.
“With regard to the Centenary Institute of Education in Yongphula, as such there is no plan to shut down or close the institute.”
