Two veteran weavers from the east win the weaving category at the 18th National Design and Arts Competition organised by Royal Textile Academy and the Textile Museum under the Department of Culture.
The winners have been weaving for decades but this is their first time participating and winning a competition. The results were declared this morning.
Chimi Wangmo from Lhuentse won the Kira weaving category. Intricate patterns of Shinglo, Dorji Ngango and Jana Chari embroidered, the award-winning Kira took Chimi more than a year to complete.
In the Gho weaving category, Khase Zangmo from Pemagatshel bagged the first prize. The silk Gho with new designs of different intricate patterns by the 49-year-old Khase says the Gho is worth around Nu 50,000.
And in embroidery, Kinley from Wangdue won the category while Pema Choejay from Tashigang topped the Traditional painting.
Similarly, Wang Rana Gurung from Sarpang was awarded the first prize in the Contemporary arts category, and Sangay Thinley from Monggar triumphed the Sculpture category. And Tselthrim Tenzin from Tsirang won the wood carving category.
The top three winners in each category are awarded cash prizes.
The competition is organised to promote the unique arts and crafts of Bhutan under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuk.
