The Prime Minister, Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y. Thinley, is leading the Bhutanese delegation to the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The delegation left for the Iranian capital, Tehran, today.
The Summit began yesterday with a theme, ‘Lasting Peace through Joint Global Governance’.
The Summit of the Heads of States and Government will be held on August 30-31. The Summit will be preceded by the Ministerial Meeting of the Foreign Ministers on 28th and 29th August and the Senior Officials Meeting from August 26-27.
The Delegation for the Ministerial Meeting will be led by the Minister-in-Charge for Foreign Affairs, Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk while Ambassador Daw Penjo, Permanent Representative of Bhutan to the United Nations in Geneva will lead the Senior Officials Meeting’s Delegation.
At the 16th Summit, Iran will assume the rotating Presidency of the Non Aligned Movement for the next three years.
NAM was formed in 1961 and comprises of 120 states and 17 observers. Bhutan joined the Movement in 1973. While at the Summit, Lyonchhoen and Bhutan’s delegation will take the opportunity to discuss
Bhutan’s candidature for non permanent membership in the UN Security Council with NAM Members and Observer States.
