The government will construct a bridge over Yudhiri River under Phongmed Gewog in Trashigang, the Prime Minister announced, yesterday. The announcement comes after a decade-long request from the locals.
Lyonchhen, who is on a tour to the Eastern part of the country, said the government will construct the bridge by next winter.
“We are carrying out a lot of feasibility studies to construct a new bridge,” said the Prime Minister. He said they have to conduct years of feasibility studies during both winter and summer seasons for the bridge to be durable.
“We already have money for the bridge but if we construct right now it will get damaged during the summer.” The government has secured and set aside Nu 41 M for the construction of the bridge.”
Phongmed Gewog remains cut off during summer after the flash-flood in 2004 washed away the bridge over Yudhiri River.
The locals repeatedly brought up the issue in numerous Dzongkhag Tshogdue meetings but nothing came through.
Besides Phongmed Gewog, the bridge will also benefit the people of Merag and Sagteng.
