ErraticPowerSupply-PhobjikhaPhobjikha valley in Wangdue Phodrang is in the grip of erratic power supply. Frequent power blackout has been tormenting the Phobjibs for years now. Power blackout is now an everyday problem in Phobjikha.

Since 2011, erratic power supply has cast a blight on the otherwise beautiful valley, the winter habitat of the endangered black-necked cranes.

The frequent power blackout is also affecting work output of the government officials. It is worse during rain and snow falls and strong winds.

There are two linemen for the three gewogs of Gantey, Phobji and Ada. But they are capable of carrying out only minor maintenance.

According to Bhutan Power Corporation’s Manager in Wangdue Phodrang, Dili Ram Adhikari, the frequent power failure is due to heating of the overhead high voltage Ariel Bundle Cable.

The whole connection, with 170-180 joinings, running through dense forest, has to be replaced if the problem is to be solved for good.

He added shortage of manpower and lack of vehicle is hindering their efforts to address the problem.
