Phobjikha, one of the winter roosting habitats received the first batch of Black-necked cranes, the endangered bird species, this morning. A group including three adults and a juvenile flew into the valley where they will roost until spring.
Every winter, the valley receives hundreds of Black-necked cranes, the highest among the winter roosting grounds. Royal Society for Protection of Nature recorded 552 cranes arriving in the country from 2020-2021. Of it, close to 500 were seen in Phobjikha alone. With a decreasing population, Black-necked crane is listed as Near-Threatened in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of threatened species.
