More than a hundred people die in road crashes each year. An additional three to eight hundred people are injured or disabled. This according to the Road Safety and Transport Authority (RSTA) is because of speeding, drink driving and bad road conditions among others.
The traffic accidents claimed 105 lives in 2016,104 in 2017 and 135 last year.
Similarly, because of road crashes, there is an increase in the number of people injured. From more than 300 people injured in 2016, the number has reached 800 last year.
“As per the report of WHO, the main causes of road crashes are categorised in three factors, human error, environmental factor and then we have vehicle factor. About 80 per cent of the road accident is due to human error,” Sonam Dhendup, the Program Officer of RSTA, said.
He added, to help address this issue and as part of the Global Road Safety Week from May 6-12, safety awareness campaigns were conducted across the country.
More than a thousand people pledged to promote road safety. They promised to follow traffic rules and respect other road users always.
“We have tried to involved students to disseminate road safety, message to the general public and we have also involved the general public, general drivers. We hope to see the positive results for whatever activities that we have carried out,” Sonam Dhendup said.
As of December last year, there are more than 100,000 vehicles in the country.
