The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, spoke about Bhutan’s foreign relations at length while presenting the State of the Nation Report, today. He said Bhutan’s credentials as a sovereign independent nation are well established.
Lyonchhen said Bhutan engages with many countries and international organizations in the region and beyond on a diverse range of issues of national, regional and global concern.“But we cannot take our sovereignty for granted. In this regard, our foreign policy and the conduct of our foreign relations are critical.”
Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay said the foreign policy of visionary Monarchs has served the Country exceedingly well. “And this government remains firmly committed to continuing the wise policy of our beloved Kings.”
He also said his first visit abroad, after assuming office to India on the invitation of India’s Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, reaffirmed the close ties of friendship, goodwill and cooperation between India and Bhutan. “I returned to Bhutan convinced that our relations with India are truly unshakable.”
The Prime Minister said the Government of India committed to support Bhutan’s 11th Five Year Plan. “They also committed an additional Rs 5 billion for our economic stimulus plan. This is a reflection of our enduring ties of friendship and cooperation.” He said Bhutan will continue to work towards further strengthening and deepening relations with the government and people of India.
