Japanese World Cup hero and former AC Milan player Keisuke Honda was introduced to the Bhutanese crowd yesterday during an exhibition match at Changlimithang. Paro Football Club, a powerhouse in the BoB Bhutan Premier League, signed Honda for the AFC Challenge League play-offs against Nepali side Church Boys United. Although the 38-year-old did not score, he provided an assist in Paro FC’s 3-2 victory over Bhutan’s under-20 national team.

As people began to pour into Changlimithang Stadium, one name echoed over and over again: Honda. As the exhibition match progressed, spectators grew increasingly excited about the talent on display.

Japanese fans who gathered to see Honda play were happy to see him received well in Bhutan.

“I know Honda very well. Before he was in the Japan national team and you know AC Milan, he also played in AC Milan. He is here, so lots of benefits not only in Paro FC but also to the Bhutanese football player, especially for the younger generation,” said Kosuke Ota.

Many children came with their parents to see Honda in action. Several people were in awe of seeing a World Cup star in real life.

“I think that a lot of the people who came today are fans of Honda. This is because Honda is an international player. I could not see him clearly on Facebook, so I wanted to see him in real life. I am satisfied and happy to see him,” said Kezang Dorji.

There was apprehension about how Honda would perform at 38, but people believed his experience would outweigh that.

“He is worth the hype because he played in the big leagues, professional football and it is his first time playing here. His age could hinder his stamina. However, with his experience, he can contribute a lot to the team,” said Sonam Yangden Dorji.

According to Paro FC, they are determined to showcase the strength and potential of Bhutanese football on the Asian stage under Keisuke Honda’s guidance.

Paro FC will take on Church Boys United on the 13th of August at Dasharath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal.

In an earlier TikTok video, Honda mentioned he might play against Tsirang FC on Thursday.
