A new traffic system that was implemented for familiarization only yesterday has been temporarily suspended. The suspension comes following a complaint by the taxi drivers. In a meeting held today, the taxi drivers complained to the Road Safety and Transport Authority that the new rule was too inconvenient.
According to the new rule, the taxi drivers are to pick up and drop off passengers only at designated taxi-stands.
But some of the taxi-drivers said the system came too early. Others said the rule was put in place without so much of a consultation with them.
“…We will create more awareness to the taxis drivers, of course to the public and then we will try to implement,” said the Traffic Superintendent Lt. Colonel, Passang Dorji.
However, it was agreed in the meeting that the system will be implemented after the Elections are over. In the meantime, they will have public consultation and consider expanding the current taxi stands. Under the system, there are ten taxi stands designated within the core town area for about 3000 taxis in Thimphu.
