The commuters travelling along the Monggar- Bumthang highway say there is a need for a motorable bridge over a stream in Namling.
The Bailey bridge over the stream was washed away by a flash flood in May 2016.
Since then, the commuters say it has been difficult for the light vehicles to cross the stream especially during summer.
“There were incidences where many light vehicles got damaged. We will grateful if the Department of Roads could construct a bridge over the stream,” Kinley, a taxi driver, said.
“I have heard once an alto car got stuck in the water and passengers travelling in a public bus had to help pull the car out.”
The Chief Engineer of the Department of Roads (DoR) in Lingmethang, Karma Rinzin, said the regional office has submitted a proposal to the headquarter for construction of a Bailey bridge over the stream.
But the department said the road is too narrow and the slope is unstable to immediately construct a bridge and there was also budget constraint.
He, however, said the project will be prioritized in the 2018 -2019 fiscal year.
Over a hundred vehicles including passenger buses ply the road between Monggar and Thimphu every day.
