Access to facilities on regular basis for the most popular sports like football, basketball, volleyball and badminton is below 50 percent. This was revealed by the Bhutan Sports Baseline Survey of 2010, conducted by Bhutan Olympic Committee.
Majority of the people interviewed for the survey felt that more infrastructure facilities need to be created for sports, initiate programmes in coaching and skills development, organise sports through formation of sports clubs and associations.
Some suggested there is need to provide career prospects in sports. The survey also revealed that most of the facilities are located in urban areas.
Bhutan Olympic Committee owns only about two percent of all sports Infrastructure, which are located largely in Thimphu. More than 80 percent of the entire infrastructure is owned by education institutes and other agencies. To optimise access to the existing facilities, the BOC plans to work with the Royal Government.
The survey was conducted to provide a wide range of information on sports participation, access to quality of sports facilities, popularity of sports, benefits from sports and perspectives of the population on sports organization and development.
